Advent Knitting, finally! Update on my Year of Projects

I decided to join the A Year of Projects Blog-Along on Ravelry >> - you can find details here >>

So here is my update on what I achieved this week.

Finally: Advent knitting and christmas projects

Okay, after the frog pond event I had with the first pair of yoga socks >> , I finally memorized the pattern and the second pair I made for me went relatively smoothly  - voila: Habemus Finished Object >>

Finished: My Yoga Socks made from Drops Nord

I quite like them and I wore them for my first Yoga lesson. This was quite nice, by the way. It was mainly getting to know each other and some easy stretching and breathing. But I like our teacher a lot more than the one I had in previous Yoga tries.

Originally, I planned to do a little yoga every day after the class, but that did not work out so far - I still would need to find the ideal occassion to do this. I could do it in the morning directly out of bed, but I keep my bedroom relatively cool, so I think this will be to cold for my taste. Well, we will see.

Christmas Knitting started: Cria

Cria: My christmas project for this year

I made it a ritual in recent years to always cast on a bigger project to knit on during the Christmas holiday season. I had the yarn * >> lying around here for 2 years already and I own the book for even longer, 6 years maybe?

However, I think it is about time I will use this - and I really like the Cria pattern >> so far. It is my first sweater using a saddle shoulder construction and it was a lot of fun trying something new.

In addition, I like to read and knit at the same time on my ebook-Reader, and this is the perfect project to do so.

Finally: Advent Knitting has started!

As I said here >>, I will knit the Star Pillow >> from December 1 to 24 to be my Advent calendar. I opened a thread in the German speaking Ravelry-Group "Zusammenstricken" >>  and I will also share my progress in the Year of Projects group. Feel free to also acheck my blog for further information >>

Started on Dec. 1st: #Starpillowkal2018

We will knit the first "body part" in the first week, the second in the second week, the zags 1-3 in week 3 and the last two zags in week 4. I casted on on Dec. 1 - voila:

My second try already: Cast on of my Star Pillow for #Starpillowkal2018

This is my second try already, to be honest, as I thought I would not need any stitch markers... yeah... I forget that this is with 5 increase points, so not an even number as usual when I knit magic loop, and so I totally messed up the increases.

As you see, I have quite a big hole in the middle, but I will just use the cast-on thread to close it in the end. I think it is just too fiddly to start with a crochet cast on or similair.

This is really fun! We are more than 10 people knitting this on Ravelry alone - maybe you also want to join? That would be great! Just join us in the Ravelry group, leave a comment on the blog or use #starpillowkal2018 on Instagram.

Further projects: Cookie baking

I started making some cookies, from peanut butter >> (which I wanted to use up anyway, I brought it from my trip to Amsterdam earlier this year >>), dates, almond meal, cinnamon and whole wheat flour - I think the turned out quite well!

So well that I will have to hide them from myself if I want to have some left for Christmas...

So, how as your week?

In finishing mode: Update on my year of projects

I decided to join the A Year of Projects Blog-Along on Ravelry >> - you can find details here >>

So here is my update on what I achieved this week and the week before (as I did not post an update last week).

There was a lot of  "just before the holidays" finishing stress the week before last which is why I did not post an update last week. But since Dec. 16, I do officially not have to go to work for the rest of the year as we have to take all the leave for 2018 in this year - yeah! Nearly 3 weeks of free time which means - a LOT OF KNITTING!

Finished my star pillow just in time!

Finished: My advent knitting project 2018, the star pillow

I have to admit: This pillow thing >> was way more tedious than I would have thought! All this fiddling around with tons of DPNs and cable needles and live stitches on hold - aargh! I do not see a lot of these in my future, definitely not!

But thanks to all the support in the lovely KAL-Group on Ravelry >>, I was able to finish in time. My pillow will be a gift (not a christmas gift, but something else which is celebrated on the 26) and has been shipped to the north of Germany already.

Very good progress on my Cria christmas cardigan

As I had quite a lot of knitting time and as I am able to knit and read at the same time on this, balancing my ebook-Reader on my knees, I made very good progress on my Cria cardigan >> (sorry for the blury picture!)

My Cria cardigan: At 43 cm body length in this picture

As you see, I tried it on and I really quite like it! It is 43 cm long in the picture, and as I want it to be on the shorter side, I plan to make it to 55 cm, 7 cm of which will be the bottom cuff/band. I want it to be as wide as the button band which is 7 cm as well.

Though the rows are verrrryyyy looong, it is really nice knitting this while reading cheesy christmas cozies! I just finished "Every Time A Bell Rings" * >> (Yes, it is inspired by the movie "It's a wonderful life" * >>) and I now read "Christmas in the snow" * >> This ritual is really the best part of the holidays for me - see here >>

Yarn shopping and sock knitting on the Monet socks

It was my birthday last week and I always get a gift voucher for my local yarn shop >>. So I obviously HAD to go and spend that voucher and here is what I got- the new sockyarn collection of Opal, inspired by paintings of Claude Monet * >>

Opal sockyarn inspired by Monet- got it from my gift voucher

I got 5 balls (there are 8 colourways in total) and I had a really hard time to decide which I should take as they are all sooooo pretty!

Of course I had to cast on a plain vanilla sock immediately >> One of my goals is to finish 1 sock a month, so I still have to knit my December socks. It is so much fun knitting with this wonderful yarn and I absolutely do not need a stitch pattern, as the self patterning yarn keeps me interested.

By the way: We got the little Buddha cookie from our Yoga teacher in class last week -isn't it cute? And it was delicious as well!

Spontaneous hat knitting - the Garter Ear Flap Hat

In the comments to this blog post >>, one of my readers mentioned that she knit several of these hats. I liked the look a lot, enough that I would not shy away from knitting garter stitch in the round which I normally to not like so much.

I grabbed two yarns from stash, one fingering and one laceweight hold together, and of I went. The laceweight is Lana Grossa Splendid * >>, it has little pearls in it, but you can hardly see those.

It was quite fun knitting this hat, though it is a little on the large side. I added 10% as I was using only size 4 instead of size 5 needles, and I have a big head. Turns out the normal stitchcount would have been enough - well, next time. Though I might only do the cuff in garter stitch and knit the rest in stockinette...

My Garter Stitch Ear Flap Hat, knit from Drops Merino Silk and Lana Grossa Splendid

No progress on the Lama, but plans for 2019

I did not crochet anythin on my lama >>, just was not in the mood for it. But as the KAL for the star pillow helped me so much to get it finished, I decided to join a similair activity for 2019, started by the German Youtuber  Jenny of "Wolliges Geplauder" >>

Every two month, she will roll a dice and participants have the following two month to finish that of their 6 projects they numbered before and finish them. I luckily do not have a lot of UFOs, so I will plan mainly projects from yarns in my stash with patterns in my stash. We will see how this goes - I am not really deep into planning here. The first dice roll will be on December 28.

So, this is it for me - how was your week?
Do you have any plans for 2019?

First finished object of 2019: Update on my Year of Project

I decided to join the A Year of Projects Blog-Along on Ravelry >> - you can find details here >>

So here is my update on what I achieved this week and the week before (as I did not post an update last week).

Happy New Year to all my readers!

First and foremost:

I wish you a very good start into a healthy, successful and totally wonderful new year 2019!

I hope you had a relaxing holiday period and a good and productive start into the fresh new year of 2019!

First finished objects of the year: My Cria Cardigan

Finished knitting on January 1st: My Cria cardigan

I finished knitting on my Cria cardigan >> on January 1st exactly. Unfortunately, when I washed it, it grew quite a lot, app. 5 cm, in length. Now it is not as cropped as I want it to be. And it could also be a little smaller, it is less fitted as I wanted it to be, especially around the arms.

Nevertheless, I would call this a success: I like the colour, I like the construction a lot and it is definitely wearable, just different than I planned it to be.
I also very much like the buttons which I got from my LYS Wollparadies >>

I really like the seamless saddle-shoulder construction and I can well imagine to make another one, more cropped and less wide then.

Finished my Opal Monet socks and love them!

In my last update >>, I told you that I invested my gift voucher into 5 balls of Opal Monet yarn * >> and how much I love it.

Finished my socks from Opal Claude Monet (colourway Venice)

Well: I finished these socks on December 29 >> and I really love them!
I learned that I am currently in a "plain vanilla sockknitting" mode, I do not want to do any additional pattern to these gorgeous self-striping yarns. It really is a pity that these are too big for me as they are meant to be a gift.

But I will definitely make at least one pair for me as well. I might even be able to use this colourway, I may have to add contrasting heels and toes, but this is fine with me.

Another pair of plain vanilla socks in the making

A fresh pair of socks started at Silvesterstrick in Karstadt Karlsruhe 2018

As I said: It is plain vanilla sockknitting all the way here! When going to our annual "Silvesterstrick" >> knitting meetup, I bought another ball of self-striping sockyarn, i.e. Regia Design Line Kaffe Fasset *>>

My Regia vanilla sock
The event is held in the restaurant of the Karstadt department store in Karlsruhe, and they happen to sell yarn in the basement.... So guess who first went to the basement, bought the yarn, then made another stopover in the ground floor to buy the latest issue of the German version of Vogue Knitting * >> - yes, you got it!

I was too lazy to search for one of my 2,25 mm needles * >> which is what I usually use for sock knitting. The 2,5 mm were still in my project bag, so I took that. However, I like the fabric I get with 2,25 mm much better, so I will definitely use these with my next pair again.

I meanwhile finished my first sock >> and the cuff of the second, so this works quite well so far.

UFO-Finishing Plans:
Re-working on my Breathing Space

Back from hibernation: My Breathing Space Sweater

I decided to join this idea of the Wolliges Geplauder Youtube-Channel >> Jenny rolled the dice for the first time by Dec. 29, and it was number one - which is my "Breathing Space" >> , the only real UFO I have currently.

I casted this on at Easter 2018 and had it abandoned during summer. I am quite confident I will finish this soon, I started the bottom ribbing of the body yesterday. So I hope to be able to finish it by the end of January at the latest

Some yarn purchase - but sock yarn does not count, right?

More sockyarn from my Buttinette voucher

Yes, I still keep up my resolution to not buy yarn, but first use what I have in my stash. Nevertheless, I am a weak human knitter... I got a gift voucher for my birthday from the Buttinette online store which I invested in some Opal yarn >>
It is the "Safari" range * >> and one ball of the "Illusion" range * >>

So, this was it for me for today!

How was your knitting / crafting start into 2019?
Any goals achieved yet?

Status Quo Domics Strickpläne 4tes Quartal: Was habe ich gestrickt bisher?

Domics Sockenparade Januar - Anfang Dezember 2018

Mein Adventsprojekt 2018: Der Star-Pillow-KAL

Weiter geplant: Das zweifarbige Dreieckstuch

Mal sehen...

Verlinkt zu Maschenfeins Auf den Nadeln >>

So, jetzt Du:

Domics Entweder-Oder-Liste: Top-Down oder Buttom-up?

Ganz klar Magic Loop!

Ganz klar Top-Down!

Ganz klar Raglan!

So, jetzt DU:
Was sind Deine Vorlieben?

Du siehst: Mein Motto bleibt weiterhin "Use what you have".

Welches sind denn nun meine 6-in-2019 Projekte?

1. UFO-Finishing: Mein Breathing Space

UFO seit September 2018: Mein Breathing Space

4. Which Way Shawl aus meinem handgefärbten Stash

Streifetuch aus Sockenwolle: Der Which Way Shawl

Den Which Way Shawl >> habe ich in den Tiefen meiner Library gefunden, und die Streifen sehen so aus, als könnte ich da idealerweise Teile meines handgefärbten Stashes verwenden.

Mein handgefärbter Sockenwoll-Stash für den Which Way Shawl

So.

So, jetzt Du:

Star Pillow Knitting and advent caroling; Update on my Year of Projects

I decided to join the A Year of Projects Blog-Along on Ravelry >> - you can find details here >>

So here is my update on what I achieved this week.

Star Pillow Knitting and advent carols

I think this will be a quite short post this week, as I do not have the feeling that I achieved a lot. But I knitted on my star pillow, of course, as I am hosting the Knit Along:

As I said here >>, I will knit the Star Pillow >> from December 1 to 24 to be my Advent calendar. I opened a thread in the German speaking Ravelry-Group "Zusammenstricken" >>  and I will also share my progress in the Year of Projects group. Feel free to also acheck my blog for further information >>

We will knit the first "body part" in the first week, the second in the second week, the zags 1-3 in week 3 and the last two zags in week 4.

Finished after week 1 of the KAL: My star pillow

It was a little frustrating inbetween, as I had to switch to DPNs instead of the circular needle inbetween. The "dangling" of the needle (or the cable, to be exact) when working magic loop was not at all convenient. So I dug deep into my needle stash and grabbed my good old DPNs. I have stopped working DPNs years ago, but after some adapting, it was ok.

The good thing is that working with the "porcupine" of 5 DPNs looks really "scary" and advanced to "knitting muggles". Nevertheless, it was good to have the KAL group, otherwise I would have probably frogged the whole thing.

We had quite an interesting discussion on  small circular needles in the Ravelry-Group "Zusammenstricken" >>  (like Addi Sockenwunder * >> or those of Chiaogoo *>> ) and I would really like to try those.

Some crochet after a long pause: Lonzo the Lama

I did not crochet for a long time, but I am currently reading a book in which one of the characters crochets amigurumi * >>, so I decided to start an amigurumi project as well - meet Lonzo, the Lama (though I think mine will be an alpaka...) >>

Lonzo, the Lama in the making

As you can see, I am not very far into it, but it is really fun making him so far! The patterns from this book * >> are all cute beyond believe and I cannot wait to make the next little critter- the seagull >>, maybe?

No further crafting, but some singing

That was it, crafting-wise, no further progress on my Cria cardigan >> But I went to a public carol singing in our Ettlinger castle on Friday, and it was just great!

Christmas singing in the Ettlingen Castle on Dec. 7 2018

You may want to check my Instagram for a video >> We sang a mix of modern and traditional christmas songs, and in addition to the band you see on the photo above, there also was a traditional "Posaunenchor" brass band for the more traditional songs.

My favourite modern christmas song would be "Stern über Betlehem" >> (that we sang on Friday)

Oder maybe it is "Mache Dich auf und werde Licht" >>? I cannot decide...
But as this is already part of the official catholic song book, this is meanwhile more a tradtional song ?

As for the "really traditional" songs, i.e. those who would be usually be sung in church, accompanied by an organ, my favourite is probably "Menschen die Ihr ward verloren" >> . But is usually very hard for the organ player to get the community to join in not toooo slow...

I also like "Ich steh an Deiner Krippen hier" in this version >> which we also sang on Friday, but as a child, I always sang a different melody i.e. this >>

So, that was my week so far.
Let me know in the comments which your favourite christmas or holiday song is !

Domics Strick-Statistik 2019: Was habe ich gestrickt in 2019

9 Strickjacken in einem Jahr - Back to Basics

So, jetzt Du:
Wie war Deine Strickproduktion 2019?
Bist Du zufrieden?
Was möchtest Du in 2020 anders machen?

The UFO has landed: Update on my Year of Projects

I decided to join the A Year of Projects Blog-Along on Ravelry >> - you can find details here >>

So here is my update on what I achieved this week

First UFO finished: Breathing Space Sweater

Remember that I started to work again on my Breathing Space from sock yarn >> ?, Well that went quite well! Last week, I was halfway through the first sleeve >>

I finished the first sleeve beginning of last week and the second sleeve on Saturday afternoon. We had beautiful sunny (but cold) weather, so I laid it out on our garden table to dry. I wanted to avoid that it stretches when hanging over our living room chairs, as I did with my Cria.

My Breathing Space sweater drying in the winter sun on our garden table

As you might be able to tell (though the photo is a bit blurry, sorry!), this table has a mesh structure, so the air can reach it from all sides, which makes it ideal for drying knitted stuff.

A little closer: My Breathing Space from (mostly) handpainted sockyarn

I really like it so far (though I still have to try it on) and it was fun knitting.
Yes, I gave it a loooong break during summer, but I really like the construction and can well imagine doing another one, but not at once. There is enough fingering weight yarn in my stash for at least 2 more... ;-)

First pair of socks in 2019 finished: The Kaffe Fassett socks

First pair of socks in 2019: Stinos from Regia Kaffe Fassett

As I guessed last week >>, I finished my first pair of socks in 2019>> on Tuesday. I quite like how they turned out, though I still like the fabric I get from slightly smaller needles better.

2nd pair of morning socks in the making from Woll Butt sockyarn

Basket weave rib socks from Woll Butt Taunus

As I finished the socks for my "morning knitting", I had to cast on a new pair. Part of my knitting resolutions >> was to use the Woll Butt yarn I still have in stash form 2017 christmas gift yarn, so I casted that on.

I did not want a totally plain vanilla sock, so I added just 2 ribs each of the Basketweave Rib pattern >>  on each side. I quite like how it turns out so far.
I am about to start the heel for the first sock now.

Sock qualifies for the Use What You Have KAL in the Mumpitz group

When browsing Ravelry, I came across the Use What You Have KAL in the Mumpitz group >> In this KAL, you can enter projects that are made from yarn that was in your stash before January 2019 and with a pattern you have not made before, but which has been in your library from earlier than 2019 as well.

So, that yarn is from 2017 and the pattern has been in my queue for a while and I have not made it before - so that is a win! I guess I will be able to enter quite some projects in there over the year, as part of my resolutions is to do exactly that: Use what I have in patterns and yarn.

I am weak - I bought sockyarn...

This sockyarn attaced me when grocery shopping and wanted to be adopted..

Yeah - speaking of "use what I have".... I was weak and bought two packs of sockyarn when grocery shopping at Aldi on Saturday. There are 4 50 g balls in each package, 2 selfstriping and 2 solids. The solids is a pale lilac (not blue as it shows on the photo) and a pale pink-purple, the selfstripings are in matching colours.

I know - I do not really need sockyarn... but those are so pretty! And you can always knit a nice pair of socks, right? Or maybe another Breathing Space sweater or so...

Still contemplating on what to cast on next

So, as I finished the first UFO of the year, I only have the morning knitting socks left on my needles. I am not sure what to cast on next as my "big" project, i.e. that project I knit when sitting on the couch in the evenings.

I am kind of reluctant to start another sweater sized sweater, so I guess I will start the Tipsy toes sock >> I talked about last week >> using some leftover sockyarn from last year - that will make it qualified for the Mumpitz KAL, yeah!

But I will take my time and enjoy browsing Ravelry for something new to start....

So, over to you: How was your week?
What did you knit?
What do you plan to knit?
