Christmas in September: Updates for A Year of Projects

I decided to join the A Year of Projects Blog-Along on Ravelry >> - you can find details here >>

So here is my update on what I achieved this week.

Christmas in September: Looking for an advent knitting project

In recent years, I always joined a christmas swap or advent calendar project on Ravelry. I got an advent calendar from a fellow Raveler and sent one in exchange and each day from 1st fo 24th of December, I had a little knitting to do and a little gift to look forward to.

However, last year I decided NOT to do that. My stash is way big enough and I would rather want to use what I have and get rid of yarn related "stuff".

Nevertheless, I wanted to have a knitting related activity during Advent. So what I did last year was, I used sockyarn scraps and knitted little hearts >> - one for each day in advent was the goal.

The idea was that I would be gifting the little hearts during the year to friends to use as a key ring pendant or just as a decorative ornament.

Well, I did this and it was fun, but there are still quite a number of little hearts left which I then did not gift so far.

So no further hearts this year. From what I had left from that scrap stash, I knitted a double-layer sockyarn hat, knitting about 5 rounds with each scrap or so. This also was fun, but another hat again? No, not really...

In another year, I joined an advent themed sock knitalong >> hosted by a Finish blog >>which was quite fun - I might do that again. I will have to look up the blog URL of that one and see if they still host that advent sock-a-long

But I am totally open to other suggestions!

Do you have an idea for an advent-themed knitalong I could do? Please leave your ideas in the comments below!

Maybe I could also do a double-layered sockyarn scrap cowl, like the Kilimanjaro cowl thingie >> I did quite some time ago (see picture)?

Idealy, this project is to be devided into 24 small knitting steps and the end result should be something useful and or beautiful.

It does not have to be knitted, maybe crochet might also be interesting?

I do NOT want to add stash and want to use what I have in patterns and yarns.

WIP: Late Summer Knitting on my Breathing Space

Progress on my second breathing space >> is quite slow, the rounds are quite long. I finished the waist shaping section and as I am planning to make it shorter than the pattern says, I am positive I might finish the body by end of September. But it takes me about 10 minutes to complete just one round which is a loooooootttt. I usually knit on it about an hour each day after work, but I often have to force myself to do this.

More Christmas in September: Advent calendar socks for Tübingen - early morning knitting

One of my goals is to finish 24 little socks for the Tübing charity project >> by beginning of October.
Currently, I knit on them for half an hour each day first thing in the morning, before I go off to work. This means that progress is slow here as well, of course, but there is progress to be seen. I finished half of my goal of 24 little socks by end of this week and I am positive that I will be able to finish the rest within the next week. I might have to increase my knitting time on these to do so, though.

So, now over to you: Do you have any suggestions what my advent project could be?
Please leave your ideas in the comments below!

    1. Hi Gracey, thanks for your comment! I am not sure about that Finnish sock thingie - I think it was in English but also could be that it was in Finnish and I used the translation function. I might bring up the advent calendar topic with my local knitting group, maybe we can organize a swap of leftovers, thanks for the inspiration

  2. Love the hearts, but I have no further suggestions I'm afraid. I really enjoyed the land of sweets cowl and I love the scrappy crochet blankets, but they are not really an advent thing. I'm knitting little socks but you are much further along than me. The strictly sockalong is under the hashtag strictly2018socks z which might help you find it.

    1. Dear Lucy, thanks for your comment! Yeah, some kind of cowl could also be a good idea. Though I do tend to not wear cowls from sockyarn as I feel they are too thin - except the Willow cowl, but I already have 3 of these.

  3. The hearts are cute and make a great idea. In the past I've knit 24 little mittens which I put a treat in for the children to have each day of advent but they make a really pretty garland decoration. I've also begun some little mini jumpers which I'm hanging on the tree with little wire hangers. The little mini jumpers can be personalised as well which will make lovely gifts. Lots of choice for mini items to be knit or you could try the advent wrap my Ambah O'Brien which is for little advent yarn calendars or indeed just a selection of scraps from your stash/leftovers. There may also be some new advent themed patterns that will come out nearer to Advent also.

  5. I have no idea for your advent knitting. Last year I made mini sweater ornaments for all the grandchildren. This year I wanted to do either Santa hats or mittens. I need to get started on those soon so they can have them for their tree.

Your hearts are precious. I might have to add those to the ornament list for one of the coming years.

    1. Oh, I love the idea of the Santa Hats! That might be a great idea, also to use as part of the grift wrap, for a bottle for example, to just put it on top of the bottle neck... *marks it on the list of ideas*

  6. I'm of no help in the idea department, but I love your Christmas hearts - and that you gave them out through the year after Christmas. So fun! For everyone. I love the idea of advent knitting (or crocheting) but I know me and I know I'd fall behind and my grand plan would soon just be like any other project I start. I finish it when I finish it. You've given me some ideas, though, and I thank you for that. Happy knitting on those 24 little socks. They are adorable!

    1. Dear Becki, thanks for the compliment on the socks. I made them a priority now and stopped knitting on the Breathing Space, but they take longer than you may think. I need about 2 hours per sock which is about a third of the time I would need for a regular woman's sock.

  7. Sorry, I don’t have any specific Advent project suggestions to offer but I do like to use sock yarn scraps in lengthwise linen stitch scarves. I’ve made a few - they are so bright and colourful! And they’re very popular... every time I knit one somebody begs for it straight off my neck!

I like the Advent themed sock KAL idea. I’m going to go check that out now!

    1. Linen stitch - not a bad idea at all - thanks! However, though I like the look, this goes soooo slow! I think broken seed stitch looks very nice as well and is a little quicker ... Maybe I could go for a cowl in broken seed stitch with sockyarn doubled???
